It operates through following segments: Passenger Cars and Light Commercial Vehicles, Trucks and Buses, Power Engineering, and Financial Services. The Passenger Cars and Light Commercial Vehicles segment covers the development of vehicles and engines, the production and sale of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, and the corresponding genuine parts business. The Trucks and Buses segment comprise of the development, production, and sale of trucks and buses, the corresponding genuine parts business and related services. The Power Engineering segment consists of the development and production of large-bore diesel engines, turbo compressors, industrial turbines and chemical reactor systems, as well as the production of gear units, propulsion components and testing systems. The Financial Services segment engages in dealer and customer financing, leasing, banking and insurance activities, as well as fleet management. The company was founded in May 28, 1937 and is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board
On January 1, 2007, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Martin Winterkorn became Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. On the same date, he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG. With effect from February 1, 2007, the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG appointed Martin Winterkorn Member of Board of Management of Volkswagen AG responsible for the area ‘Group Research and Development’. At the same time, he additionally took over the chairmanship of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand. Winterkorn joined the Board of Management of Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Stuttgart, on November 25, 2009, assuming responsibility as Chairman of the Board of Management of this company in addition to his other functions. Winterkorn was born on May 24, 1947, in Leonberg (Germany). He studied Metallurgy and Metal Physics at the University of Stuttgart from 1966 to 1973. From 1973 to 1977 Winterkorn was a PhD student at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research, where he received his doctorate in 1977. Winterkorn’s professional career began in 1977 as a specialist assistant in the research division "Process Engineering" at Robert Bosch GmbH. From 1978 to 1981 he headed the refrigerant compressor development group "Substances and Processes" at Robert Bosch GmbH and Bosch-Siemens-Hausgeräte GmbH. In 1981 Winterkorn joined AUDI AG as assistant to the Member of the Board for Quality Assurance. Two years later, he assumed responsibility for "Measuring Technology/Sampling and Test Laboratory" at Audi. At the beginning of 1988, he was made departmental head of "Central Quality Assurance", and in 1990 Head of Audi Quality Assurance. In 1993 Winterkorn became Head of "Group Quality Assurance" at Volkswagen AG and was appointed General Representative of Volkswagen AG in March 1994. He was additionally responsible for Volkswagen Group Product Management from June 1995. In January 1996 Winterkorn took over as Member of the Board of Management for "Technical Development" at the Volkswagen brand. From July 2000 he was Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG responsible for Research and Development. Winterkorn became Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG on March 1, 2002. In addition to this, Winterkorn assumed responsibility for Technical Development at AUDI AG on January 1, 2003. In his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, Winterkorn was also a Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. In 2003 Winterkorn was made an honorary professor of Budapest University of Technology and Economics. On August 1, 2004, he was awarded an honorary professorship from the Technical University of Dresden for the subject area "Lightweight Materials in Automotive Engineering". On July 18, 2007, Winterkorn received an honorary professorship from Tongji University, Shanghai, which has enjoyed a close scientific partnership with Volkswagen for many years. On May 6, 2011, Winterkorn received an honorary doctorate ("Dr. Ing. e.h.") from Chemnitz University of Technology, on November 29, 2012, he was awarded the honorary doctorate (“Dr. rer. pol. h.c.”) from Technische Universität München.
Hans Dieter Pötsch, Chief Financial Officer
The Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG transferred responsibility for Finance and Controlling at Group level in the Board of Management to Dipl. Wirtsch.-Ing. Hans Dieter Pötsch with effect from September 5, 2003. The Supervisory Board had already appointed Hans Dieter Pötsch as full member of the Board of Management, initially without portfolio, with effect from January 1, 2003. In addition to his other duties, Pötsch has been a member of the Executive Board of Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Stuttgart, Germany, since November 25, 2009, where he also holds the post of Chief Financial Officer. Hans Dieter Pötsch was elected to the Bertelsmann AG Supervisory Board effective May 30, 2011.
Pötsch was born on March 28, 1951 in Traun, near Linz, Austria. He studied industrial engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany.
He started his professional career at BMW, where he worked from 1979 until 1987, latterly as Head of Group Controlling. He then moved to Trumpf GmbH & Co. KG in Ditzingen, Germany, as General Manager for Finance and Administration. From 1991 until 1995, Hans Dieter Pötsch was Chairman of the Board of Management of Traub AG, Reichenbach, Germany.
In July 1995, Hans Dieter Pötsch moved to Dürr AG in Stuttgart, Germany, where, until the end of 2002, he was Chairman of the Board of Management and also responsible for the central function 'Quality Management, Planning, Internal Auditing and Company Communications'.
Michael Macht, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, with responsibility for ’Group Production’
With effect from October 1, 2010, the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG appointed Michael Macht member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for ‘Group Production’. Michael Macht was Chairman of the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG and a member of the Board of Management of Porsche Holding SE from July 23, 2009 to September 30, 2010. Prior to that, Macht was the member of the Board of Management in charge of Production and Logistics of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG from June 1998 to July 2009. Michael Macht was born in Stuttgart on August 28, 1960. He studied mechanical engineering at Stuttgart University from 1981 to 1986 and subsequently worked as a scientist at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO, where he was responsible for the implementation of restructuring and organizational projects with major companies. Michael Macht started his career in the automotive industry at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, where he was a specialist for engine planning from 1990 to 1991. He took charge of the work organizations section in 1991 before serving as Director’s Assistant for production and materials development in 1992, where among other things he developed the concept and organization of the PVP Porsche improvement process. Macht became Personal Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG in 1993, developing and implementing the P.O.L.E. program (process optimization through supplier integration). In 1994 Macht was named Managing Director of the newly-established Porsche Consulting GmbH, a position he held until he joined the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG in 1998. On November 19, 2010, Macht received an honorary doctorate with the academic title of Dr.-Ing. E. h. from Stuttgart University.
