BHP Billiton Ltd. is a global resources company, which is engaged in minerals exploration, development, production and processing; and oil and gas exploration, development and production. The company's commodities include iron ore, metallurgical coal, conventional and non-conventional oil and gas, copper, energy coal, aluminium, manganese, uranium, nickel and silver. It operates through the following segments: Petroleum, Aluminium and Nickel, Base Metals, Diamonds and Specialty Products, Iron Ore, Manganese, Metallurgical Coal and Energy Coal. The Petroleum segment explores for, develops and produces oil and gas. The Aluminium and Nickel segment engages in the mining of bauxite, refining of bauxite into alumina and smelting of alumina into aluminum metal; and mining and production of nickel products. The Base Metals segment engages in the mining of copper, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, uranium and gold. The Diamonds and Specialty Products segment engages in the mining of diamonds and titanium minerals and potash development. The Iron Ore segment engages in the mining of iron ore. The Manganese segment engages in the mining of manganese ore and production of manganese metal and alloys. The Metallurgical Coal segment engages in the mining of metallurgical coal. The Energy Coal segment engages in the mining of thermal coal. The company's history roots back to the incorporation of BHP on August 13, 1885. BHP Billiton was founded after the merger of BHP and Billiton in June 2001 and it is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia.
