Pacer International, Inc. is an asset-light transportation and global logistics services provider. The company operates through two segments: Intermodal segment and Logistics segment. The Intermodal segment provides intermodal rail transportation, local cartage and intermodal marketing services. It also offers full service door-to-door intermodal services to its customers, includes end-user customers, transportation intermediaries, such as intermodal marketing companies and steamship lines. The Logistics segment provides highway brokerage, and warehousing and distribution, international freight forwarding, ocean and air shipping and supply chain management services. The company was founded by Donald C. Orris in 1997 and is headquartered in Dublin, OH.
In December 2009, Daniel W. Avramovich was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pacer International, with executive responsibility for all Pacer International business units. Most recently, Mr. Avramovich served as Pacer’s Chief Operating Officer from June to December 2009, and led all the day-to-day functions of Pacer’s retail and wholesale intermodal service units, as well as the highway brokerage, supply chain, and warehousing service units. He joined Pacer International as Retail Intermodal Services President in June 2008, where he was responsible for all of the commercial and operating activities of our retail door-to-door intermodal product.
Mr. Avramovich brings more than 25 years of senior leadership and extensive intermodal experience with some of the transportation and logistics industry experts, most recently with Kansas City Southern and Exel Logistics. In addition, he is skilled at building value-added relationships with customers and vendors, and cohesiveness within organizations.
Mr. Avramovich graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Akron University and a Master’s of Science in Accounting from Kent State University.
Michael A. Burns, Chief Commercial Officer
Michael Burns serves as Chief Commercial Officer and is responsible for Pacer’s commercial activities. Prior to his current position, Mr. Burns was Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing for Ozburn-Hessey Logistics; served as Senior Vice President, Global Automotive and Industrial for DHL Logistics, a division of Deutsche Post World Net; and held senior sales roles at Exel plc (which was acquired by Deutsche Post World Net in December 2005), including Senior Vice President of Strategy and Development and Senior Vice President of Global Development. Mr. Burns earned a Master's in Operations and Logistics Management from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor's of Science from Miami University.
John J. Hafferty, Chief Financial Officer
John Hafferty serves as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to his current position, Mr. Hafferty was Chief Financial Officer for the international division of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics, a global freight management company; served as Senior Vice President, corporate strategy and development for Schenker, Americas, a unit of Schenker Logistics, Co., a global transportation and logistics company; and held various senior positions at United Parcel Service, including Executive Vice President, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Chief Operating Officer of UPS Freight Services, and Chief Financial Officer of UPS International Package Operation. Mr. Hafferty will report to Pacer’s Chairman and CEO, Daniel W. Avramovich. Mr. Hafferty earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accounting at Kansas State University.
James E. Ward, Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer
James E. Ward has served as Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer since April 2007. As an independent contractor, Mr. Ward served as acting Chief Information Officer for Pacer International from August 2006 until joining Pacer as an employee. From May 2003 to April 2007, Mr. Ward served as a consultant to Dynotech, LLC., a consulting firm focusing on global ERP implementations, IT evaluations, offshore development, interim CIO positions, and data center outsourcing. During his time as a consultant, he also held interim CIO positions with Clark Steel framing, a steel framing manufacturer (from April 2005 to April 2007) and with Norton Lilly International, a provider of shipping, logistics and marine services in the United States, Canada, Panama and Caribbean (from May 2004 to December 2006). From July 1996 to April 2003, Mr. Ward served as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Inchcape Shipping Services, a leading marine services provider.
