Paul Maritz, CEO
Paul Maritz joined VMware in July 2008, bringing more than 30 years of technology experience. Maritz started his working career in 1978 at Burroughs Corporation in London. In 1981, he joined Intel in Silicon Valley and spent five years working in the area of software development tools. Maritz then spent 14 years (1986-2000) at Microsoft where he served as a member of the five-person Executive Committee that managed the company, and oversaw the development and marketing of system software products (including Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 2000), development tools (Visual Studio), database products (SQL Server) and Exchange product lines. After his service at Microsoft, he founded Pi Corporation, an early cloud-oriented company, which was then acquired by EMC in 2008.
Born and raised in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa, Maritz holds degrees in mathematics and computer science from the Universities of Cape Town and the University of Natal. He serves on VMware’s board of directors and also serves as chairman of the board of the Grameen Foundation, which sponsors third-world development projects and provides microfinance support around the world. Maritz has an active interest in aviation, wildlife issues and using technology to improve life in developing countries.
Carl Eschenbach, Chief Operating Officer and Co-President
Carl Eschenbach joined VMware in June 2002 and acts as the company’s chief operating officer. Eschenbach brings more than 24 years of high-tech industry experience including infrastructure software, networking, telephony and storage. Prior to joining VMware, Eschenbach was vice president of North America Sales at Inktomi, and he has held various sales management positions with 3Com, EMC and Lucent Technologies.
Tod Nielsen, Co-President, Application Platform
Tod Nielsen joined VMware in January 2009 and leads the company’s application platform business, bringing more than 20 years of leadership experience in enterprise software and application development. Most recently, he was president and chief executive officer of Borland Software, where he had led the company since November 2005. Prior to Borland, he served as senior vice president of marketing and global sales support for Oracle and was chief marketing officer and executive vice president of engineering at BEA Systems, where he oversaw BEA’s worldwide marketing strategy, operations and research and development. Nielsen joined BEA after the acquisition of his private company, Crossgain Inc., where he served as CEO. He also spent 12 years with Microsoft in various roles including general manager of database and developer tools, vice president of developer tools, and vice president of Microsoft’s platform group.
