GORDON M. NIXON, President and Chief Executive Officer
Gordon Nixon is president and chief executive officer of RBC, the brand name for Royal Bank of Canada and its subsidiaries. He is also a director of Royal Bank of Canada and chairman of RBC's Group Executive.
Mr. Nixon began his career in 1979 at Dominion Securities in Toronto where he worked in Global Markets and subsequently the Investment Banking division. In 1986, he transferred to Tokyo to assume responsibility for the firm's operations in Japan. Dominion Securities was acquired by Royal Bank of Canada in 1987 and Mr. Nixon returned to Toronto in 1989 as a managing director of Investment Banking. In 1995, Mr. Nixon was appointed head of Global Investment Banking and in 1999 became chief executive officer of RBC Capital Markets and a member of Royal Bank's Executive Committee. He was appointed president of Royal Bank of Canada on April 1, 2001 and chief executive officer on August 1, 2001.
Mr. Nixon is chairman of MaRS, a not-for-profit organization that connects science, business and capital and co-chairs The Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council. He is a director and past chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and is Chairman of the Queen's University Capital Campaign and the Ontario Premier's Jobs and Prosperity Council. Mr. Nixon has served as a director of a number of organizations in the arts, health care and education and has chaired numerous events and fundraising campaigns including the United Way of Greater Toronto.
Mr. Nixon has been awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. He is a recipient of Canada's Outstanding CEO of the Year Award, the Canadian Business Leader Award, has twice been included on Barron's list of the World's Best CEO's, and is an Honouree of the Public Policy Forum. He has an Honorary Doctor of Laws from both Queen's University and Dalhousie University and is a recipient of the CIJA/UJA Words and Deeds Leadership Award, the Rotary Foundation's Paul Harris Fellowship, the Queen's Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Medals, a Learning Partnership Champion of Public Education Tribute and an American Banker Innovator of the Year Award. Born in Montreal in 1957, Mr. Nixon attended Queen's University where he received an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree. He and his wife live in Toronto and have three children.
JANICE FUKAKUSA, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer
Janice Fukakusa is RBC's Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer. As a member of RBC's Group Executive, she is one of nine executives responsible for setting the overall strategic direction of RBC. In addition, she chairs Group Operating Committee, responsible for enabling the integration of governance and overseeing the day to day functional, operating and technology activities across RBC.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Fukakusa was Executive Vice-President, Finance. Her various roles and responsibilities included Vice-President, Portfolio Management, Senior Vice-President, Multinational Banking, Chief Internal Auditor, and Executive Vice-President, Specialized Services, RBC Banking. Since joining RBC in 1985, she has held positions in retail and business banking, corporate banking, account management, corporate finance, treasury, strategic development and corporate functions.
Ms. Fukakusa is a director of various RBC subsidiaries, including RBC Europe Limited, RBC Dexia Trust, and Symcor Inc. She serves on a number of professional and charitable organizations including Wellspring Cancer Support, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Schulich School of Business. In addition, Ms. Fukakusa has earned the designation of FCA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and in 2007 she was inducted into Canada's Most Powerful Women Hall of Fame.
Prior to joining the bank, Ms. Fukakusa worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP where she obtained the professional designations of chartered accountant and chartered business valuator.
Ms. Fukakusa obtained her Bachelor of Arts from University of Toronto and holds a Master of Business Administration from Schulich School of Business.
Morten N. Friis, Chief Risk Officer
As chief risk officer, Mr. Friis oversees the strategic management of risk on an enterprise-wide basis. He is a member of RBC's Group Executive, which sets the overall strategic direction of RBC.
Mr. Friis joined RBC in 1979 and was appointed chief risk officer in 2004. Prior to this position, Mr. Friis was executive vice-president and chief credit officer for RBC. Mr. Friis joined RBC's Group Risk Management in 1997 as a senior vice-president with primary responsibility for credit and counterparty risk issues.
In more than 30 years with RBC, Mr. Friis has worked in many different areas including Project Finance, Corporate Banking, Fixed Income, Business Banking and RBC's financial institution business.
Mr. Friis is on the boards of the Harvard Business School Club of Toronto and the Philadelphia-based Risk Management Association. He is also a founding member and chairman of the International Financial Risk Institute, and sits on the advisory board for the Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work at Carleton University.
Mr. Friis has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Queen's University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Mr. Friis and his wife, Janice, have two children.
