Don Thompson, President and Chief Executive Officer
As President and Chief Executive Officer of McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD), Don Thompson leads the world’s largest foodservice company. McDonald’s serves nearly 68 million customers everyday in 119 countries and employs more than 1.7 million people across the globe in corporate and restaurant positions.
During his 22 years at McDonald’s, Thompson has helped drive business results and global strategic innovation across the organization. Since joining as an electrical engineer in 1990, he has held a variety of key leadership positions within the company including Regional Vice President, Division President and Chief Operating Officer. Between 2006 and 2010, Thompson served as President of McDonald’s USA, the company’s largest business segment. Most recently as President and COO of McDonald’s Corporation, Thompson and his leadership team established three global growth priorities in support of the McDonald’s Plan to Win: to optimize our menu, modernize the customer experience and broaden restaurant accessibility.
In July 2012, Thompson became President and CEO and is leading the company’s mission to become “our customers’ favorite place and way to eat and drink.”
A true advocate of collaboration and believer in the strength of the McDonald’s three legged stool, Thompson and his leadership team work closely with the 5,000 independent owner/operators, corporate staff and restaurant employees as well as countless McDonald’s suppliers.
A leader in the business community, Don serves on the Board of Directors for McDonald’s Corporation, the Exelon Corporation, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Purdue University. Thompson also serves as a member of Civic Committee of the Commercial Club, The Economic Club, World Business Chicago and the Brazier Foundation.
Thompson has been recognized for his leadership and passion by the Illinois Holocaust Museum (2012 Humanitarian Award), the Executive Leadership Council (2010 Corporate Award), the Trumpet foundation (2008 Corporate Executive Award), and Black Enterprise (2007 Corporate Executive of the Year).
Thompson received a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and an Honorary Doctorate degree in Science from Excelsior College.
Thompson resides in the Chicagoland area with his wife and two children.
Peter J. Bensen, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Pete is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of McDonald’s Corporation, a position he has held since January, 2008. He is currently responsible for all financial matters for McDonald’s, including Accounting, Internal Audit and Controls, Tax, Treasury and Investor Relations, as well as IT, Shared Services, Facilities and Aviation.
Mr. Bensen joined McDonald’s in 1996 as Director of Financial Accounting & Reporting and subsequently held positions of increasing responsibility. He served as Vice President and Assistant Controller from February, 2002 to March, 2007. In April, 2007, Pete was appointed Senior Vice President and Corporate Controller. Prior to joining McDonald’s, Pete was a senior manager for Ernst & Young in Chicago, where he served large multi-national audit clients. He also had assignments in the Mergers & Acquisitions Practice and Midwest Region Accounting & Auditing Group.
Mr. Bensen is a graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society.
Pete and his wife Beth reside in Downers Grove, Illinois with their three boys. While not attending the boys’ various sporting events, Pete enjoys golfing and listening to his iPod.
Tim Fenton, Chief Operating Officer
As Chief Operating Officer, Tim Fenton oversees business operations for more than 33,500 McDonald’s restaurants in 119 countries. He also has responsibility for Global Supply Chain, Franchising and Development.
Previously, Fenton served for seven years as President, McDonald’s Asia, Pacific, Middle East and Africa, where he was accountable for the 38 countries and more than 8,800 McDonald’s restaurants in this region.
Before that, Fenton served as President, East Division, for McDonald's USA, where he oversaw more than 5,200 restaurants in the eastern United States, covering eight geographical regions in 21 states.
Prior to this, Fenton served as vice president and managing director of the Middle East Development Company, in which he was responsible for 300 restaurants in 11 countries throughout the Middle East, Turkey and Greece. He then went on to serve as senior vice president of Southeast Asia/Middle East/Africa. He was responsible for 1,300 restaurants in 22 countries throughout Southeast Asia/Middle East/Africa and oversaw market and brand development, restaurant operations, sales growth, financial performance, and management development.
Fenton, a 39-year veteran of McDonald’s, began his company career in 1973 as a crew member in Utica, N.Y. He held several restaurant and operations positions, including operations manager of the South Florida Region, field service manager of the Kansas City Region, and director of operations, operations training, security, and purchasing in the same region.
In 1990, Fenton was promoted to a director for Asia Pacific and, from 1992 to 1995, he served as managing director for McDonald’s Poland and vice president of McDonald’s Central Europe North.
During his time in Poland, Fenton served as vice president of American Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw, and in 1994 and 1995, he was on the Board of Directors for Friends of Luetefska Children’s Hospital, also in Warsaw.
Fenton has been recognized throughout his career at McDonald’s, starting with his contributions as a restaurant manager. In 1979, he was awarded Manager of the Year. Later in his career, he was awarded Albany Region Outstanding Contributor. He also won McDonald’s International Profit Achievement Award in 1995.
Tim, his wife Joan, and their three sons live outside Chicago.
