Randall L. Stephenson, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President
Randall Stephenson is chairman and chief executive officer of Dallas-based AT&T Inc. Since becoming chairman of the company in 2007, Mr. Stephenson has strengthened AT&T’s position as the world’s largest telecommunications company and as a global leader in mobile Internet and IP-based business communications services. Under his leadership, AT&T also has grown dramatically as a provider of advanced TV services, with the AT&T U-verse platform now reaching some 30 million U.S. customer locations.
From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Stephenson served as the company’s chief operating officer, where he was responsible for all wireless and wired operations, and from 2001 to 2004 he served as the company’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer. Mr. Stephenson was appointed to AT&T’s board of directors in 2005.
Born in Oklahoma City, Mr. Stephenson began his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1982 in the information technology organization in Oklahoma. He then progressed through a series of leadership positions including an assignment in Mexico City as SBC International’s director of finance, overseeing SBC Communications’ ownership interest in Teléfonos de México. In 1996 he was named controller for SBC, and he later served as the company’s senior vice president for consumer marketing.
Under Mr. Stephenson’s leadership, AT&T has undertaken the largest education initiative in company history — AT&T Aspire, a philanthropic program to help improve college/career readiness for students at risk of dropping out of high school. Aspire I invested more than $100 million to support educational initiatives, and as part of the effort, AT&T employees completed more than 100,000 job shadows to help student connect success in school with a good career. In 2012, AT&T announced Aspire II, a new and expanded financial commitment of $250 million planned over the next five years.
Mr. Stephenson is a member of the board of directors of Emerson Electric Co. and a National Executive Board member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Ronald E. Spears, Senior Executive Vice President-Executive Operations
As Senior Executive Vice President-Executive Operations, Ron Spears is responsible for implementation of the One AT&T integration project, merger transition, corporate flight operations and executive support. He was appointed to his current position in September 2010.
Previously, Mr. Spears was president and chief executive officer, AT&T Business Solutions, where he was responsible for leading the company's sales, marketing and customer service operations for retail business, government and wholesale customers of AT&T worldwide. AT&T Business Solutions is focused on delivering the industry's most globally consistent portfolio of networking products and services to businesses ranging from small companies to the world's leading multinational firms.
Before assuming that role, Mr. Spears was group president, Global Business Services, where he was responsible for leading sales, marketing and customer service operations for a $34 billion business within AT&T serving mid-sized, large and global retail companies, government and wholesale customers. Other positions he has held at AT&T include executive vice president-Business Sales, where he was responsible for developing and executing AT&T's retail sales strategy across multiple market segments, and senior vice president-Signature Client Group, where he led the sales effort on behalf of AT&T's largest multinational customers.
Prior to joining AT&T in March 2002, Mr. Spears was chairman of Vaultus, Inc., which provides mobility application solutions for enterprise customers. Before that, he served as president and chief executive officer of CMGI Solutions, an enterprise-focused Internet solutions provider, and as president and chief operating officer of e.Spire Communications, an integrated communications provider.
Mr. Spears has served as corporate vice president at Citizens Utilities, where he managed the company's independent telephone company operations in 13 states. A pioneer in the competitive long distance industry, Mr. Spears managed MCI's Midwest division, where he helped create a national account sales effort that led to MCI's first sales to major corporate customers.
He began his telecommunications career as a manager with AT&T Long Lines in 1978 after eight years as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Spears is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds a master's degree in public service from Western Kentucky University.
John J. Stephens, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
John Stephens is Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer responsible for directing financial planning, accounting, tax, auditing, investment management, financing and investor and shareowner relations for AT&T. He was appointed to his current position in June 2011.
Previously, Mr. Stephens served as Senior Vice President and Controller responsible for all financial reporting and operations, accounting policy, business planning, and regulatory reporting for AT&T. He was also responsible for all corporate tax and shared services activities matters. He was named to that position in November 2001.
Prior to serving as Controller, Mr. Stephens served as Vice President-Taxes, where he oversaw all corporate tax matters, a position he was appointed to in August 2000. He previously served as managing director-taxes, where he had similar corporate tax responsibilities. He was named to that position in 1995.
Mr. Stephens joined the company as director-federal taxes in St. Louis in 1992. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Stephens served as a tax senior manager with Ernst & Young in St. Louis. His career also includes serving as a member of the tax staff of Peat Marwick & Mitchell in Kansas City.
Mr. Stephens earned his B.S.B.A. degree in Accounting from Rockhurst College in Kansas City. He also holds a J.D. degree from St. Louis University's Law School. He has served on the board of directors of Telmex, a Mexico based provider of predominantly wireline communication services, and América Móvil, an international provider of telecommunications service. Additionally, he serves on the audit committee of the Board of Directors of a large privately held retailer. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Stephens serves on an advisory board to the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. Mr. Stephens has also served on the board of numerous educational and social service organizations.
Mr. Stephens and his wife, Michele, have been married 31 years and have six children.
