Its programs include higher education, test preparation, language instruction and professional training. Its media operations consist of the ownership and operation of cable television systems, newspaper publishing and television broadcasting. The company operates through seven reportable segments: Kaplan Higher Education, Kaplan Test Preparation, Kaplan International, Cable Television, Newspaper Publishing, Television Broadcasting and Other. The Kaplan Higher Education segment includes Kaplan's postsecondary education businesses, made up of fixed-facility colleges as well as online postsecondary and career programs. The Kaplan Test Preparation segment includes Kaplan's standardized test preparation and tutoring offerings. The Kaplan International segment includes professional training and postsecondary education businesses outside the United States, as well as English language programs. The Cable Television segment operations consists of cable systems offering video, Internet, phone and other services to subscribers in Midwestern, Western and Southern states. The Newspaper Publishing segment includes the publication of newspapers in the Washington, area and Everett, newsprint warehousing, and the company's digital media publishing businesses. The Television Broadcasting segment operations are conducted through six VHF television stations serving the Detroit, Houston, Miami, San Antonio, Orlando and Jacksonville television markets. The company was founded by Stilson Hutchins in 1877 and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
