The RTC closed in 1995 and was generally regarded as a success as it recovered, using private-sector contractors, over 85% of the value of the assets it held. The final cost to American taxpayers for the savings and loan crisis proved to be much less than originally estimated, totaling $132 billion rather than figures of $500 billion that had been floated. Prior to his Congressional service, Mr. McMillen was a member of the 1972 Olympic team and played 11 years in the National Basketball Association.
