Total SA engages in all aspects of the petroleum industry. It operates through the following segments: Upstream, Downstream, and Chemicals. The Upstream segment covers oil and natural gas exploration; development and production; and coal, gas, and power activities. It evaluates exploration opportunities based on a variety of geological, technical, political, and economic factors as well as on projected oil and gas prices. It also focuses on the commercial development of gas resources and the research and development related to alternative energies as complementary energy resources to oil and gas. The Downstream segment conducts refining, marketing, trading, and shipping activities. It refines crude oil to make commercial products such as liquefied petroleum gas, automotive and aviation fuel, lubricants, fuel oil, and asphalt. It also supplier refineries with crude oil and transports refined products to consumer markets. The Chemicals segment includes base chemicals and specialty chemicals activities. The base chemicals activity includes petrochemical and fertilizer businesses while the specialty chemicals activity includes rubber processing, resins, adhesives, and electroplating. The company was founded on March 28, 1924 and is headquartered in Courbevoie, France.

Christophe de Margerie, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Christophe de Margerie, born in August 1951, joined the Group after graduating from the École Supérieure de Commerce in Paris in 1974. He served in several positions in the Group’s Finance Department and Exploration & Production division. He became president of Total Middle East in 1995 before joining the Group’s executive committee as the President of the Exploration & Production division in May 1999. He then became Senior Executive Vice President of Exploration & Production division of the new TotalFinaElf group in 2000. In January 2002 he became President of the Exploration & Production division of Total. He was appointed a member of the Board of Directors by the Shareholders’ Meeting held on May 12, 2006 and became Chief Executive Officer of Total on February 14, 2007. He was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total on May 21, 2010.
Philippe Boisseau, President
Philippe Boisseau graduated from France's Ecole Polytechnique engineering school and is a member of France’s engineering Corps des Mines. He began his career in 1986, serving in a number of French government ministries before joining the staff of the Minister of Defense in 1993 as an industrial affairs and R&D advisor. Mr. Boisseau joined Total in 1995 as Crude Oil Supply Manager at Total Petroleum North America, a Refining & Marketing subsidiary based in Denver, Colorado. He was subsequently appointed Product Trading Manager, Europe in Refining from 1997 to 1998. He then became Strategic Planning Manager for Argentina in Exploration & Production in 1998. The following year, he was appointed CEO of Total Austral in Argentina. He was appointed President, Middle East in Exploration & Production in March 2002. In January 2005, M. Boisseau was appointed as a member of Total’s Management Committee. In February 2007, he was named President, Total Gas & Power. His role is to develop the downstream segment of the natural gas chain and alternative energies (solar, nuclear and biomass) to support Total's conventional oil and gas activities. In January 2012, M. Boisseau was named President, Supply-Marketing and member of the Executive Committee.
Patrick de La Chevardière, Chief Financial Officer
Patrick de La Chevardière, born in March 1957, is a graduate of École Centrale de Paris and École des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC). He joined Total in 1982 and served as a drilling engineer at Exploration & Production division until 1989. He then joined the Finance Division as a Project Manager, before he was appointed Vice President, Operations and Subsidiaries in 1995. He is appointed Vice President, Asia for Refining & Marketing in 2000, Deputy Chief Financial Officer in September 2003 and a member of the Management Committee in January 2005. Patrick de La Chevardière has been Total’s Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Executive Committee since June 2008.
