Terrence W. Cavanaugh, President and Chief Executive Officer
Terrence W. Cavanaugh serves as president and chief executive officer of Erie Insurance. A native of Chicago, Cavanaugh joined ERIE in 2008 after a distinguished 33-year career with the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies. He began his career as a bond underwriter for Chubb Surety in 1975 after graduating from the University of Notre Dame. Cavanaugh progressed through a variety of positions with increasing responsibility in Chubb’s property/casualty business. These included several branch manager positions followed by two Zone Officer positions. As a Zone Officer, he was responsible for underwriting, claims, loss control and marketing activities, including management of the agency distribution relationship in up to 17 states. He was credited with growing revenues and expanding the agency distribution channel, and raising underwriting, service and marketing functions to new levels of effectiveness. These achievements led to his appointment as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for Chubb in 1999. As CMO, he developed new product capabilities that led to a rise in new products and premiums. Cavanaugh was then asked to return to Chubb Surety to serve as its Chief Operating Officer, a position he held until joining ERIE in July 2008. Cavanaugh currently serves on the Board of Governors of Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI). In addition to PCI, he is on the board of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, Mercyhurst University, Saint Vincent Health System, the United Way of Erie County, and the American Institute for CPCU and Insurance Institute of America.
Rick Burt, Executive Vice President, Products
Rick Burt, FCAS, joined ERIE in July 2011 and serves as executive vice president, Products. Burt most recently served as senior vice president and chief actuary at ERIE. Prior to joining ERIE Burt worked at Deloitte Consulting LLP as a partner and practice leader for the firm’s Actuarial, Risk & Analytics practice in Los Angeles, Calif. There he was responsible for setting the growth strategy of the practice, nurturing and expanding client relationships in the West Region’s marketplace, and developing and mentoring the actuarial, analytics and insurance staff consultants. Prior to Deloitte, Burt served as Vice President & Actuary for the global insurance broker Willis; Senior Manager for Coopers & Lybrand with a focus on pricing and reserving for personal and commercial insurers; and Actuarial Manager for Aetna Life & Casualty. Burt earned a bachelor’s degree in economics & physics from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS).
Marcia A. Dall , Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Marcia A. Dall, CPA, CPCU, serves as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Erie Insurance. As CFO, Dall has responsibility for all accounting, finance, tax, investment management and actuarial functions for ERIE. She is also a member of the executive council, which develops the strategy for the Erie Insurance businesses. Prior to joining ERIE in 2009, Dall served as chief financial officer for the Healthcare division at Cigna Corp., a global health services company. Prior to Cigna, she was a corporate officer for Genworth Financial Inc., a former subsidiary of General Electric. At Genworth, she served as chief financial officer for the International and U.S. Mortgage Insurance Segments. There she partnered with the leadership team in the strategic, operational and financial management of the business. Dall began her career in 1985 in the Financial Management Program at General Electric and, throughout her tenure with the company, held various leadership positions both in finance and operations. Her experience includes: senior business analyst for GE Capital Services; executive vice president of Customer Operations for GE Capital Railcar Services and later chief financial officer for the unit; and senior vice president of Insurance Products for GE Financial Assurance, which led to her career with Genworth. While at GE, Dall earned four prestigious Pinnacle Awards in recognition of her accomplishments. The June 2008 issue of CFO Magazine listed Dall as number five on its list of 25 Women to Watch, the magazine’s “pipeline of women poised to become Fortune 500 CFOs.” In May 2012, the magazine named Dall among the honorees for its first Women in Finance Awards. A certified public accountant, Dall holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and a master’s degree in management from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management. Dall serves on the Board of Directors for Gannon University in Erie, Pa.
George "Chip" Dufala , Executive Vice President, Services
Chip Dufala, CPCU, serves as executive vice president, Services, at Erie Insurance, a regional property/casualty and life insurer based in Erie, Pennsylvania. The primary responsibility of the Services role is sustaining and enhancing ERIE’s delivery on its Above all in ServiceSM commitment. It includes oversight of the Corporate Claims, Field Claims, Corporate Services, Customer Service, as well as the Service division that oversees Enterprise Program Management and Crisis Prevention and Management. Dufala joined ERIE in 1993 in the district sales manager training program. Shortly after, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, as a district sales manager. In 1997, he was named branch manager for the Illinois branch office which he established, and a year later was appointed assistant vice president. In 2002, he was promoted to regional vice president of ERIE’s Heartland Region, which includes the company’s Illinois and Wisconsin operations. In 2005, he was promoted to senior vice president of the Customer Service Division. Dufala held this position until October 2008 when he was promoted to senior vice president of Erie Family Life. Dufala’s responsibilities included overseeing processes and identifying ways to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of the life company for the benefit of Agents, Policyholders and the company. Erie Family Life encompasses customer service, claims, processing, billing and underwriting. Dufala earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Labor and Industry, the Thiel College Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurse Association in Erie, the Board of Governors for the Erie Philharmonic and on the Leadership Giving Committee for the Erie County United Way. Dufala has earned designations as a Certified Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Customer Service (ACS), Associate in Claims (AIC), Associate in Insurance Services (AIS), Associate of Insurance (AINS), Associate in Personal Insurance (API), Certified Professional Insurance Agent (CPIA) and Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF). He is a member of the Pennsylvania Life Underwriter Association and the Certified Professional Insurance Agents Society
Bob Ingram , Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Bob Ingram, serves as executive vice president and chief information officer for Erie Insurance. Prior to joining ERIE, Ingram served as senior vice president and chief information officer at The Hartford, one of the nation’s largest financial services and insurance companies. Ingram began his career consulting at Accenture, where he was employed for twelve years and worked on projects across industries. Ingram later joined USAA where he was responsible for the technology functions supporting the Property and Casualty Company, USAA’s largest operating subsidiary, and the operation of the enterprise document services organization. While at USAA he led a five year, $500M effort replacing key functions in the software application portfolio, as well as a three-year transition of a 2,800 employee staff function to a standalone P&L Company. Ingram was later employed by Safeco, where he where he held the role of executive vice president and chief information officer. His appointment coincided with a dramatic increase in technology investment and a focus on improving speed and agility in the market place. Ingram earned an MBA in Finance and Accounting and a bachelor’s in Business Management from Texas A&M University.
John F. Kearns, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing
John Kearns, FCII, serves as executive vice president of Sales & Marketing at Erie Insurance. Kearns oversees the Sales & Agency and Strategic Marketing divisions. Kearns joined ERIE in 2007 as senior vice president and division officer, Commercial Lines & Reinsurance. Prior to ERIE, Kearns served as president of financial and professional services at St. Paul Travelers. In that capacity, Kearns was responsible for three business units: Financial Institutions (property/casualty and financial lines), Professional Liability and Corporate Management Liability. Kearns, a native of Dublin, Ireland started his insurance career in 1976 as an underwriting trainee in Sun Alliance in Dublin. During his 20-year career there, he spent time in underwriting, claims and management, and held the position of head of Commercial Lines from 1990 to 1996. From 1996, Kearns served as chief executive officer of St. Paul Ireland Insurance and established the company’s operations in Ireland. Kearns earned a master’s degree in business administration from Dublin City University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Trinity College, Dublin. He is a fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, a United Kingdom based professional organization for the insurance and financial services industry. Kearns is currently on the board of WQLN Public Television.
