The company operates through three reporting segments: Rig Technology, Petroleum Services and Supplies, and Distribution and Transmission. The Rig Technology segment designs, manufactures, sells and services complete systems for the drilling, completion, and servicing of oil and gas wells. This segment offers equipment that automates complex well construction and management operations, such as offshore and onshore drilling rigs; derricks; pipe lifting, racking, rotating and assembly systems; rig instrumentation systems; blowout preventers; coiled tubing equipment and pressure pumping units; well workover rigs; wireline winches; wireline trucks; cranes; flexible pipe for offshore production applications; and turret mooring systems and other products for floating production, storage and offloading vessels and other offshore vessels and terminals. The Petroleum Services and Supplies segment provides a variety of consumable goods and services used to drill, complete, remediate and workover oil and gas wells and service drill pipe, tubing, casing, flowlines and other oilfield tubular goods. This segment manufactures, rents and sells a variety of products and equipment used to perform drilling operations, including drill pipe, wired drill pipe, transfer pumps, solids control systems, drilling motors, drilling fluids, drill bits, reamers and other downhole tools, and mud pump consumables. The Distribution and Transmission segment provides pipe, maintenance, repair and operating supplies and spare parts to drill sites and production locations, pipeline operations, and processing plants worldwide. The company was founded in 1841 and is headquartered in Houston, TX.

Merrill A Miller Jr, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Merrill A. Miller, Pete, Jr., has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of National Oilwell Varco Inc. (formerly National-Oilwell Inc.) since November 2000 and since May 2001 respectively. Mr. Miller served as the Chief Operating Officer of National Oilwell Varco Inc., from November 2000 to March 11, 2005. From 1997 until National Oilwell's merger with Varco International in March 2005, he served in several executive positions with National Oilwell, including as its President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, President of National Oilwell's Products and Technology Group and Vice President of Marketing for Drilling Systems. He served as a Vice President of National-Oilwell Inc., since July 1996 and also served as its Group President of Products and Technology since April 1997. Mr. Miller served as a Vice President of Dreco Energy Services Ltd., since July 1996 and served as its Group President - Products and Technology since April 1997. He served as a General Manager of Drilling Systems from July 1996 to April 1997 and as its Vice President of Marketing from February 1996 to July 1996. Previously, he served as the President of Anadarko Drilling Company from January 1995 to February 1996. From May 1980 to January 1995, Mr. Miller served in various capacities including Vice President of U.S. Operations of Helmerich & Payne International Drilling Co., a drilling contractor where he spent 15 years. He served as in the U. S. Army for 5 years. He has been the Chairman of National Oilwell Varco Inc. since July 22, 2005 and previously served in the same capacity from May 2002 to March 11, 2005. He has been a Director of Chesapeake Energy Corp., since January 16, 2007 and National Oilwell Varco Inc., since May 2001. He served as a Director of Penn Virginia Corp., from February 2, 2006 to January 2007. He served as a Lead Independent Director of Chesapeake Energy Corp., from March 2010 to June 2012. He served as a Director of Bayard Drilling Technologies Inc., since October 1997. He serves as a Director of Spindletop International, a charitable organization that donates funds to Houston area youth charities, and serves as a member of the National Petroleum Council. He serves as a Director of the Offshore Energy Center, Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association. Mr. Miller holds a Degree in Applied Science and Engineering from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1972 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980.
