Tony Best is the chief executive officer of SM Energy. Mr. Best joined SM Energy in June 2006 as president and chief operating officer. In December 2006, he relinquished his position as chief operating officer when Javan D. Ottoson was elected to that office, and on February 23, 2007, Mr. Best was elected chief executive officer of SM Energy when Mark Hellerstein retired from that position. Mr. Best was appointed to the board of directors concurrent with his appointment as chief executive officer. From November 2005 to June 2006, he was developing a business plan and attempting to raise capital for a start-up exploration and production entity. From 2003 to October 2005, he was president and chief executive officer of Pure Resources, Inc., a subsidiary of Unocal, where he managed all of Unocal's onshore U.S. assets. From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Best had an oil and gas consulting practice, working with various energy firms. From 1979 to 2000, he worked in a variety of positions with ARCO, including a period as president: ARCO Permian, president; ARCO Latin America, field manager for Prudhoe Bay; and vice president of External Affairs for ARCO Alaska.
Mr. Best has served on numerous industry and nonprofit boards, including Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States (IPAMS), Colorado Association of Commerce & Industry (CACI), New Mexico Oil & Gas Association (NMOGA), Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), and the United Way. He is also on the board of the Private Enterprise Research Center (PERC), as well as the Advisory Council for Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He was elected president of the 10,000-member Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets Association in 2006, and also serves on the board of the 12th Man Foundation at Texas A&M.
Mr. Best earned a master of science degree in engineering management from the University of Alaska and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1972. Following graduation, he served five years in the U.S. Air Force as an engineering officer.
Jay Ottoson, President & Chief Operating Officer
Javan (Jay) Ottoson joined SM Energy Company as executive vice president and chief operating officer at the end of 2006. He was appointed as President of the Company in 2012.
Immediately prior to joining SM Energy, Mr. Ottoson was senior vice president of Drilling and Engineering with Energy Partners, Ltd. in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has 28 years of experience in the energy industry, having started his career working for ARCO as a summer intern in the company’s Houston refinery. After his graduation from Colorado School of Mines with a bachelor of science degree in chemical and petroleum refining engineering in 1980, he joined ARCO Coal in Denver as a synfuels process development engineer.
Mr. Ottoson moved to Alaska with ARCO in 1982 and spent the next 16 years working in jobs with progressively more responsibility in the company’s oil and gas operations. Some of the positions Mr. Ottoson held were Operations superintendent at Prudhoe Bay, vice president of Operations and Development in the Permian Basin, and commercial director for ARCO’s subsidiary operating in the U.K. North Sea. In 1998, he was appointed president and resident manager of ARCO China, Inc. in Beijing, PRC. At that time, ARCO was the largest foreign producer of natural gas in China and was building additional businesses in LPG importation, downstream marketing and power generation.
Mr. Ottoson is a native Coloradoan and grew up on a farm outside of the small community of Eaton in north-central Colorado.
Wade Pursell, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Wade Pursell is currently the executive vice president and chief financial officer of SM Energy Company.
Mr. Pursell joined SM Energy in September 2008.
Prior to joining SM Energy, Mr. Pursell was recruited to Helix Energy Solutions in 1997 (formerly Cal Dive International), as vice president and treasurer to understudy and eventually succeed Mr. Jim Nelson, the incumbent chief financial officer. In addition to his transitioning activities, his primary duty was to lead Cal Dive’s IPOs.
In November of 2000, he was promoted to chief financial officer, reporting to the chief executive officer. During his tenure, he built and supervised a staff of 120 from the vice presidents of Finance, Accounting (CAO), Tax, Internal Audit, and IT (CIO). During his time with Helix, the company rose from $100 million in revenues and $200 million in EV with two locations to its current status of revenues of more than $2 billion and EV of $5 billion and nine locations and 2,000 employees around the world. To accomplish this, the company needed to execute several complex transactions, which Mr. Pursell orchestrated.
Mr. Pursell spent his first ten years following graduation in Arthur Andersen’s Energy Audit Practice. He rose from the position of accountant to senior accountant manager, and eventually to senior manager in the Oilfield Services Industry.
Mr. Pursell graduated from the University of Central Arkansas, Conway, Arkansas, with a bachelor of arts in 1987.
